Association: Women face tougher path to CEO job Women who want to run some of the world's largest companies must work harder than their male peers to obtain top positions, according to a new study of Fortune 500 companies by the American Management Association. AMA examined the backgrounds and experience of Fortune 500 CEOs, of which 4.8 percent are women. It found that female chief executives earned more rigorous academic degrees, have greater work and life experience when first appointed, and proved more often to have worked their way up internally.
